Meet the Mayor
"Semper Fidelis" , this Latin phrase is the Marine Corps motto meaning " Always Faithful". It is this attitude and dedication that I commit myself to as a public servant. It is truly a Honor to serve Our Phoenixville community as your Mayor. I am a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a graduate of LaSalle University with a degree in Criminal Justice / Sociology. Upon graduation from LaSalle I worked for more than 20 years at Saint Gabriel's Hall as a mental health counselor,a drug and alcohol counselor and a Unit Manager. I retired as a Communications Center Coordinator whose duty it was to provide a safe and secure environment by overseeing 200 troubled youth as well as staff. After my retirement from Saint Gabriel's I spent a couple of years as a Legislative Assistant for the State Representative of the 157th District
I have served as Borough Councilman for the East Ward from 2008 to 2013. I have served as the Vice President of Council since 2011 and have been the Chair of the Police ,Personnel and Public Safety Committee for six years. I have also served as Vice Chairman of the Civil Service Commission. As a strong supporter of the safety of borough residents I am a volunteer firefighter with the Phoenixville Fire Department.
The Mayor's primary duty is to oversee the police department. My first contact with the Phoenixville Police Department was about 9 years ago when the department began a initiative called the Youth Aid Panel. I was selected as the Chairman of this panel. In summary the Youth Aid Panel is a balanced approach to restorative justice, which is aimed at rehabilitating the offender, including making amends to the victim, while keeping the community safe. It is important to insure young people have positive role models to frame acceptable social behavior.
As Phoenixville grows ,as Mayor I will insure that the Police Department continues on its current path of emphasizing the safety of the community while maintaining respect for individuals. We are fortunate to have one of the finest police departments in Chester County. Working in conjunction with the Chief and officers I will work to assess where we are and where we want to go this includes continuing to incorporate good police work with good community relations.
We are more than a community ,we are a family.
Michael J Speck , Mayor
