PHOENIXVILLE PRIDE CROSSWALKS BRING ACCEPTANCE TO THE COMMUNITY

Mural is First of Its Kind in Chester County

On Sunday, June 5th, local volunteers joined together with members of the LGBT Equality Alliance of Chester County to paint the crosswalks rainbow at Bridge Street and Church Alley. Dating back to the late 1970s, the rainbow flag is an enduring symbol of pride and support for the LGBTQ community. The first of its kind in Chester County, this mural, dubbed ‘Pride Walk’ is a large-scale visual representation of diversity and inclusivity.

Happening during the weekly road closure for PXV Inside Out, the crosswalk painting took on an almost party-like atmosphere. Families out for a stroll stopped to help, with babies in strollers and dogs in tow. Local face-painter, Abigail Severino, joined the group and painted many happy faces.

Mayor Peter Urschler said of the crosswalks, “I am so grateful to the volunteers and Borough for bringing this project into reality. Phoenixville is home to extraordinary people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Together, we ensure every person is safe, loved and celebrated. Our Pride crosswalks are a beautiful reflection of our community, and are a daily reminder to approach every person and situation with respect and understanding.”

The project was completed just in time for the 5th annual Chester County Pride Fest, which will feature shopping, local food vendors, and live entertainment. Pride Fest will be taking place on Sunday, June 11th from 12pm – 5pm in the 100 and 200 block of Bridge Street.
